Quirky interview questions are often asked to see how candidates respond with pressure.  My personal belief is that by putting candidates at ease, then you get to see as much of the “real” person as possible in an interview scenario.  Quirky questions from well known organisations include:

  • “Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?” (Dell)
  • “If you were a box of cereal, what would you be and why?” (Bed Bath & Beyond)
  • “You’re a new addition to the crayon box, what colour would you be and why?” (Urban Outfitters)
  • “If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?” (Yahoo)

I’ve always been of the opinion that interviews are a two way process.  Not only does the job seeker have to prove that they are the right person for the job, but the interviewer also, has to sell the benefits of the company and why it’s a great place to work.  Too many quirky questions will put the person on the receiving end, on edge and potentially end up resenting the interview.
